In Europe, opened another plant that extracts carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

The excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of our planet has long been worrying ecologists and scientists. But, as it turned out, the problem can be turned into valuable raw materials and use gas to produce fuel or other useful things. This is exactly what the Swiss company Climeworks does, which has opened another plant for the extraction of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

In the summer of 2017, the first carbon dioxide recovery plant from air opened in Switzerland. The factory was built by Climeworks near Zurich. The company installed equipment, the operation of which is based on DAC technology. Technology DAC (Direct air capture) - "direct capture and purification of air" is based on the extraction of carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, by sucking it with a huge vacuum cleaner. The filter material contains amines - special chemicals that trap carbon dioxide. The design capacity of this plant is 900 tons of carbon dioxide per year. If you compare with the real objects producing this greenhouse gas, it turns out that the work of the plant will level carbon dioxide emissions from 200 working cars. Of course, this is negligible even on the scale of a large city, not to mention the country or the world, so the project has a number of critics who point to its low efficiency.

But the Swiss do not intend to stop there and continue to open new plants. Not so long ago, the company opened its third carbon dioxide air purification plant, which is located in the Italian municipality of Troy, Foggia province. This plant will capture up to 150 tons of gas per year. The extracted carbon dioxide is planned to be sent to methane production, to agricultural producers, and also to be sold to industrial enterprises that require this raw material in the process.

As practice shows, it turned out to be much more difficult to clean the air of greenhouse gas than to pollute it. But the Climeworks example proves that carbon dioxide can and should be fought.
