The blue hole in the Bahamas where divers dive to test their courage

Near the island of Long Island in the Bahamas there is a favorite place for extreme people. In the bay near the small town of Clarence Town, the color of the sea from the usual sky blue very quickly turns into dark blue, almost black, color. And all because there is a huge funnel hiding under the water surface over a depth of more than two hundred meters.

Blue holes have long been chosen by tourists and divers, the most famous of them is located in Belize. But Dean's Blue Hole is much deeper - 202 meters (against 124). Hundreds of travelers come here to test their courage and plunge into this seemingly unrealistic crater. Well, where else is it to sit over a gigantic dip under water, hanging his legs in it?

Dean's blue hole was named after the man who once owned these lands. Inside, it has the shape of a truncated cone: if at the surface its diameter hardly exceeds 30 meters, then to the bottom it expands to a hundred meters. Immersion in the funnel is very dangerous and can not do without tragedies. Sometimes divers cannot swim out of the funnel, losing their orientation in space and floating deeper and deeper.

There are a lot of similar formations in the ocean. They appeared many millennia ago, even before the beginning of the ice age. In those days, the level of the oceans was much lower and all these caves were on the surface. Most often, such funnels appeared under the influence of rainwater, which washed huge cavities in the rocks. And when the sea level on the planet rose to its present state, all this turned out to be under water.

However, Dean's frightening hole, it turns out, is not the deepest blue hole on Earth. In the South China Sea there is an even more terrible funnel. Locals called her the Dragon Hole, and her depth is more than three hundred meters. True, these data are not yet officially certified. But this place has long managed to acquire Chinese myths: it was believed that in the depths of these waters there lives a dragon who commands the underwater world.
