Canadian photographer traveled 30,000 km taking Soviet bus stops

Canadian photographer Christopher Herwig spent several years photographing bus stops in the countries of the former USSR. This project was born unexpectedly when in 2002 he challenged himself, setting himself the task of taking one good picture every hour during his bike trip from London to St. Petersburg. 30,000 km and 13 countries later Herwig introduced the world to the project "Soviet bus stops", the creation of which was not without difficulties.

"Despite the fact that I did my best not to arouse suspicion, I was accused of espionage several times, I miraculously escaped trouble," says the photographer. "In Abkhazia, the driver accused me of being a Georgian spy. He demanded a bribe, otherwise he threatened" with police and execution. "
