African lake that instantly kills animals

In the north of Tanzania, near the border with Kenya, the most alkaline lake on the planet is located - Natron. The water in it can reach 60 ° C, while it is so salty that it is deadly for almost all living things.

In this regard, a terrible phenomenon is observed near Lake Natron: when exposed to water, animals instantly die, and their lifeless bodies are overgrown with minerals that turn poor fellow into scary statues. Tourists who come there can often see petrified birds and animals that have fallen into the trap of the lake.

When the photographer Nick Brandt saw this, he simply could not resist not to capture them on camera. So a whole series of unique frames appeared, for the creation of which Nick needed to put the frozen figures in “live” positions. Thanks to his idea, according to the photographer, the dead were able to return to life again, even if only in his pictures.

However, not all living creatures are threatened with water by the lake. Despite its danger, it is also an excellent medium for growing small flamingos. These birds specially fly here to nest on the salt islands of Natron. Since the nests are surrounded by deadly waters, no predators can reach them.

There are two versions of the name of this strange Tanzanian lake. The most common of them is that he was nicknamed Natron because of the mineral contained in a huge amount of the same name. According to the second version, the lake got its name because of the color of the water, since the Natron translates as "red".
