Photographer made rare footage of sleeping sperm whales.

Do sperm whales sleep? Until recently, scientists and experts could not unequivocally answer this interesting question. But now, thanks to the professional underwater photographer Franco Banfi, the whole world has got undeniable evidence that these huge creatures sometimes like to take a nap.

Banffy was fortunate enough to make a very rare shot of a flock of sperm whales in the Caribbean near the island of Dominica. The animals suddenly stopped moving and entered synchronized vertical peace. Such behavior was first recorded only in 2008, when a group of biologists from the UK and Japan plunged into the water among completely motionless sperm whales. After further research, they found that such a collective sleep occupies about 7% of the whale’s life and lasts for very short periods of time, from just 6 to 24 minutes.

Diver Sabrina Belloni poses next to these majestic creatures.
